Meals on Wheels In Macon County

Our Mission
To nourish and enrich the lives of homebound and disabled individuals by providing nutritious meals that promote independent living.

What is Meals on Wheels?

Meals on Wheels is a community service that delivers hot and healthy noontime meals to an individual in the comfort and privacy of their own home. Our meals are planned and prepared under the supervision of a Registered Dietician at Decatur Memorial Hospital. All Meals are heart-healthy and diabetic-safe. The meals provide one-third of the recommended daily allowance of nutrition. Specialized diets, including renal, low lactose, and pureed are also available.

Our meals are delivered by dedicated volunteers Monday through Friday between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Who is Eligible to Receive Meals on Wheels?
Individuals who are 60 years of age or older and are homebound are eligible, as well as some disabled people under the age of 60 through managed care and the department of rehabilitation services.

What is the Cost?
Meals on Wheels is available to all seniors that need our services regardless of income. Clients contribute to the cost of their meals based on a sliding fee scale, but no eligible client is ever turned away.

How Do I Apply to Receive Meals on Wheels?
Anyone can make a referral by calling the Meals on Wheels office at 217-422-6611, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Some basic information will be collected, and then the Meals on Wheels staff will arrange for a home visit assessment.

What does a Meals on Wheels Volunteer do? And how do I become one?
Our volunteers not only deliver a hot and healthy meal but also provide a friendly check to see that all is well.  Our volunteer may be the only person the senior sees that day, so smiles are encouraged! Most routes take under an hour and are under 15 miles.

Volunteers are welcome to help weekly, once or twice a month, as an occasional backup, or on Holiday breaks.  We are happy to work with your schedule. Simply call Meals on Wheels at 217-422-6611 for more information and to complete our short screening process.
